Lunch shift
Best option: South Carolina at UCF
Announcers: Sean McDonough, Chris Spielman and Shannon Spake
Odds: South Carolina -7
Weather: Mid-80s, clear
Few teams in the nation are friskier than UCF, which boasts a 3-0 record with a win at Penn State and two convincing wins over the chaff on its resume. Coming to town is highly ranked South Carolina and the Eater of Worlds, Jadeveon Clowney. UCF QB Blake Bortles will be trying to avoid USC's monster DE, and if he does, this could be a shootout. Bortles is one of the most efficient passers in the nation thus far and averaged almost 12 yards per attempt (!) through three games.
Plan B: Miami at USF, Oklahoma State at West Virginia
Yeah, you'll want to be watching USC-UCF. If there's any intrigue here, it's how Oklahoma State handles the increased scrutiny of late. Wait, what's that? The players can't hear how much the announcers discuss the Sports Illustrated story? They can't hear the announcers at all? Oh, well then, no distractions await on the field, and West Virginia's about to get rocked.
Keep it in mind: Miami (Ohio) at Illinois, East Carolina at North Carolina
Illinois' offense with new coordinator (and former Western Michigan head coach) Bill Cubit has been fun to watch. Seriously! And speaking of fun to watch, Larry Fedora has UNC running one of the most inventive, up-tempo offenses in the nation. Catch these games early, because the second halves might be sufficiently out of hand for both teams to close up the playbook for the day.
In case of emergency: Pittsburgh at Virginia
This will set football back by decades.
Afternoon
Best option: LSU at Georgia
Announcers: Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and Tracy Wolfson
Odds: Georgia -3
Weather: mid-70s, clear
This is the type of game you tolerate the non-conference slate for. Two top-10 programs going at it under perfect skies, one with a dominant defense and a lunatic coach and the other with boatloads of NFL talent and one of the best passers in the nation. Both teams are legitimate division-title contenders with scant room for a loss on their resumes, so this could be one of the most hotly contested games of the SEC season. A must-watch.
Plan B: Oklahoma at Notre Dame, Florida State at Boston College
OU-ND is ostensibly a top-25 matchup, which seems really fun, but Notre Dame has fallen off substantially from last year and Oklahoma has such a reputation for big-game gags as of late that this win will have a significant undertone of "yeah but." Also, fun fact! Notre Dame is 9-1 all time against OU, including the two Sooner losses that bookended their record-setting 47-game winning streak in the mid-'50s under Bud Wilkinson. Expect the NBC announcers to "wake up the echoes" (Notre Dame reference) about this fact multiple times during the broadcast.
Keep it in mind: Wake Forest at Clemson, Army vs. Louisiana Tech
I just said LSU-Georgia is a must-watch, and here you are putting on a Wake Forest game? I mean, I know Clemson's also playing, but jeez.
In case of emergency: Iowa at Minnesota
You know, in case there are massive, simultaneous earthquakes that swallow up the other five games. We did say "emergency."
Evening Shift
Best option: Wisconsin at Ohio State
Announcers: Brent Musberger, Kirk Herbstreit and Heather Cox
Odds: Ohio State -7.5
Weather: 70s, clear
One trip to the Big Ten Championship likely hangs in the balance, as these two teams are far and away the top contenders to the throne in the Leaders Division. We haven't seen Ohio State seriously challenged by anybody yet, thanks to its ludicrous non-conference schedule, and Wisconsin's still reeling from having a shot at a win taken away by deplorable refereeing at Arizona State. Is the Buckeye defense physical enough to slow down the Badgers? Will Braxton Miller have any rust to worry about? How long a leash does he have until unlikely star Kenny Guiton gets the call again at QB? And how many rushing yards will these teams combine for, aside from all of them?
Plan B: Ole Miss at Alabama
This one might only be close for about 20 minutes or so, but if it stays competitive longer, it's absolutely worth your time. Ole Miss has a young crop of players that's one of the most tantalizing in the nation, and this could well be their coming-of-age game (what better stage, right?). Then again, Bama's favored by 17, so y'know; it might not be pretty.
Keep it in mind: Texas A&M at Arkansas, Arizona at Washington, Cal at Oregon
Some very fun coaches facing some strong opposition here: Bret Bielema's Razorbacks just dropped a game to Rutgers and now have to slow down Johnny Manziel and the Aggies, Rich Rodriguez's out at Arizona, rising like a... mythical bird of rebirth whose name I can't think of, and Sonny Dykes takes his Bear Raid up to Eugene to get demolished by face Oregon.
In case of emergency: Fresno State at Hawaii
This kicks off at midnight ET, so... you should probably go to bed.
