Iowa State vs. Tulsa final score: Cyclones spin away from Golden Hurricane 38-21

Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Thursay's battle of disastrous weather systems goes to Iowa State.

The Iowa State Cyclones (1-2) rode the momentum from a late first half touchdown drive and a stifling defense to a 38-21 win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (1-3) Thursday night. After falling behind 14-7 on a pair of Tulsa second-quarter scores, the Cyclones went 66 yards in just 1:11 and closed the first half with a touchdown pass from Sam Richardson to Jarvis West.

Richardson kept his hot hand through the halftime break, leading another quick scoring drive early in the third quarter. His 16-yard touchdown pass to E.J. Bibbs gave the Cyclones a 21-14 lead. Jeff Woody extended the lead to 28-14 with a one-yard plunge over the goal line nine minutes later.

A fourth-quarter field goal pushed the Iowa State lead to 17 points. After a Tulsa touchdown drive, Golden Hurricane quarterback Cody Green threw an interception deep in his own territory. It was Tulsa's fourth turnover of the night, and effectively ended any chance of a comeback. Woody cashed in with his second touchdown of the night to seal the victory.

Box Score Hero: Cyclones quarterback Sam B. Richardson completed 26 of 41 attempts for 255 yards and two scores, setting season highs in completions, attempts, and yards in the process.

Richardson has to share honors with running back Aaron Wimberly, who ran for 137 yards on just 19 attempts, including a 35-yard dash to the Tulsa goal line that set up Iowa State's first touchdown.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither Iowa State nor Tulsa should figure in the rankings any time soon, but the win gives the Cyclones some much-needed confidence heading into next week's prime time Big 12 clash with Texas.

But Did They Cover? Tulsa entered Thursday's game as a 4-point favorite over the Cyclones, and came up woefully short of covering the spread.

Next Week's Schedule: Iowa State's Thursday night escapades aren't over yet, with the Texas Longhorns coming to Jack Trice next Thursday night. Tulsa hosts the Rice Owls Saturday, October 5.
