Devonte Fields injury: Top TCU DE out due to foot

Fields won't play Saturday against SMU.

TCU standout defensive end Devonte Fields will miss Saturday's game against SMU with a foot injury, Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson told Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Fields hurt his foot during TCU's 20-10 loss at Texas Tech on Sept. 12. The Horned Frogs haven't commented on the extent of the injury, but if he's missing a game two weeks after it originally occurred, it is likely somewhat significant. Although, Patterson could be holding Fields out as a precaution against a non-conference opponent. The Horned Frogs opened as 19.5-point favorites in the game.

He was suspended for the first two games of the year due to an unspecified violation of team rules, but Patterson brought Fields back early in the second half of TCU's Week 2 game against Southeastern Louisiana. However, the head coach has said Fields still has to serve the remainder of his suspension.

In limited action this year, the D-lineman has compiled four tackles and two tackles for loss. As a freshman in 2012, he put up 53 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss, 10 sacks, four pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and one interception. The impressive campaign earned Fields freshman All-American honors, and he was named Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year.

TCU hosts SMU Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. Kickoff is set for noon ET, and the game will air on Fox Sports 1.
