Outback Bowl 2014 final score: LSU mashes Iowa up front, wins 21-14

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

LSU tailback Jeremy Hill led a powerful ground game as the Tigers held off a late challenge to win in Tampa.

Les Miles improved to 41-2 out of conference at LSU as his Tigers punished an ordinarily strong Iowa defense, winning the Outback Bowl, 21-14.

With senior QB Zach Mettenberger out with a knee injury, LSU ran the ball on every play of its first drive, an eight-play, 77-yard mashing that ended in a 2-yard score for true freshman QB Anthony Jennings on third down. Jennings didn't have a particularly good game, going 7 for 19 for 82 yards and a pick, but he wasn't asked to do much and LSU still got all it needed for the win.

The Tiger defense was particularly stout, and starting Iowa QB Jake Rudock managed just 102 yards and a pick on 22 attempts before bowing out at the end of the third quarter to a knee injury. Big back Mark Weisman was also held solidly in check, registering only 37 yards and a score on 18 carries. All in all, Iowa had only 233 yards of total offense along with three turnovers; that's a major win for the LSU defense, and a win for the team as a whole.

Box Score Hero: Jeremy Hill mashed the Iowa defense to the tune of 28 rushes, 216 yards and two scores, including the clincher with 2:02 on the clock.

Rankings Ramifications: LSU will rise to the vicinity of No. 13 or so with the win, while Iowa will continue to be unranked.

But Did They Cover? LSU came in favored by 7.5 or 8 points, depending on who you asked, so Iowa's touchdown with 1:42 to push the game back to seven points was important to degenerates. Don't bet on college football. It's a cry for help.
