UPSET ALERT: Auburn clings to 21-13 lead over FSU

After Auburn delivered its second-quarter body blow, Florida State's defense tightened up, allowing just 35 total yards on 12 plays in the third quarter. This gave Jameis Winston and company an opportunity to chip into the Tigers' lead, but the Seminoles weren't able to do very much with the opportunity. FSU gained only 91 yards on 18 plays, shortening the deficit to 21-13.

On Auburn's first possession of the second half, the Tigers got into third and long when left tackle Greg Robinson was called for holding. Nick Marshall failed to connect with Sammie Coates on third-and-18, and Auburn was forced to punt. It was a similar story for the Tigers on their other two third quarter possessions. Auburn kept finding itself in third and long, and that's not something its offense is built to recover from.

Florida State's 67-yard field goal drive was its longest scoring drive of the night, but the Seminoles will need to conjure up much more production than that if they are to avoid being upset.

UPSET ALERT: Auburn leads FSU 21-10 at halftime

The Auburn offense awoke from its first-quarter slumber. Until it was already down three scores, the Florida State offense did not, so the Tigers lead the Seminoles, 21-10, at the half of the BCS National Championship. The Tigers out-gained FSU, 232-156, and Auburn's disruptive front seven helped limit Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston to six completions in 15 attempts for an average gain of just 4.1 yards.

Until a successful fake punt late in the second quarter sparked a Florida State touchdown drive, it looked like Auburn might be on its way to a blowout. Following the trick play, Winston led the Seminoles inside the Tigers' 10-yard-line using mostly his legs, and Devonta Freeman ran the ball in for a 3-yard touchdown to cap the 11-play, 66-yard drive -- just the Seminoles' second drive of 19 or more yards all night.

While FSU's offense continued to struggle, Auburn's offense began the second quarter by scorching the FSU secondary. On The Tigers' third offensive play of the second frame, Nick Marshall found Melvin Ray wide open across the middle, and the sophomore wide receiver took it 50 yards to the end zone.

The Seminoles went three-and-out on their next offensive possession and gave the ball right back to the Tigers, who went on a bruising 11-play, 46-yard drive. On fourth-and-3, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn decided to try a 33-yard field goal, but Cody Parkey pushed it wide right. It felt like the kind of mistake that might precipitate a quick-strike touchdown from the heavily favored Seminoles. Instead, Winston was stripped two plays later, and the Tigers got the ball right back at the 27-yard line. It only took six plays for Marshall to punch the ball into the end zone on a 4-yard zone-read keeper.

What has been most shocking is how well Auburn has been able to move the ball through the air. Thirteen pass attempts is a bit on the high side for the average Marshall outing, but the junior signal-caller already has that many through halftime.

Though the Tigers have only been able to move the ball at 4.1 yards a clip on the ground, they're in excellent position to begin wearing down the Seminoles as Malzahn's offense has done to so many teams this season. Winston will have a lot to say about whether that comes to pass, though. FSU gets to ball to start the second half, and a scoring drive to narrow the lead to 21-17 would help prevent Auburn from sitting on the ball for the rest of the game and trying to run out the clock.

Auburn leads FSU 7-3 after sluggish first quarter

After one quarter, a BCS National Championship Game that was expected to be defined by explosive offensive performances by both teams has featured more punts than scoring drives. The Tigers and Seminoles combined for just 144 total yards and 10-point underdog Auburn leads, 7-3.

In fact, it was special teams that put Auburn in position to get its first points of the game. After pinning Florida State inside its own 2-yard line, the Tiger defense got pressure with its front four and forced the Seminoles to go three-and-out. From there, Chris Davis returned Cason Beatty's punt 22 yards to give Auburn first-and-10 on the FSU 25-yard line. The Tigers were able turn that great field position into a touchdown when Tre Mason hauled in Nick Marshall's screen pass and scampered 12 yards into the end zone.

This gave Auburn the 7-3 lead and FSU's first deficit since late September.

On its opening drive, Florida State was marching down the field with ease, and it looked like the Seminoles might slice and dice its way through the Auburn defense. But on third-and-8, Nosa Eguae got to Jameis Winston in the backfield, forcing the Seminoles to settle for a field goal.

There have been only four total possessions between the teams so far, so it's too early to draw big conclusions about the performances, but both Auburn and Florida State have looked sluggish on the offensive side of the ball.
