The Indian selectors announced the team for the five match ODI series and one off T20 match in Sri Lanka in the month of July. Indian cricketers who are on an unprecedented break are expected to leave for a camp before the series begins.
There were no major surprises in the selected team. Sachin Tendulkar in a bid to further extend his international career has opted out of the series. Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan who were not a part of the Asia Cup in March make their way back into the team. Tendulkar's opting out comes as a blessing for young Ajinkya Rahane who enhanced his reputation during the IPL. The young batsman though fared poorly in the series in West Indies in all formats.
The other players to miss out are Ravindra Jadeja, the Pathan brothers - Irfan and Yusuf, and Praveen Kumar. Jadeja who is often termed as the Steve Smith of Indian cricket, continues to befuddle fans and selectors with his blow hot, blow cold performances. Pragyan Ojha gets a look-in, in his place after two years. Irfan Pathan and Praveen Kumar had to make way for the fast improving Umesh Yadav and the pace spearhead Zaheer Khan.
The Indian team also has Ravichandran Ashwin and Rahul Sharma in their ranks as specialist spinners.
