As the end of the first stage of the 2011 Tour de France neared, chaos erupted, with a crash enveloping much of the peloton. Phillipe Gilbert stayed clear of the carnage, gutting out a sprint to the finish to easily take the stage victory and earn the right to wear the Maillot Jaune.
