West Ham United vs. Southampton: Final score 4-1, Saints make multiple errors at the back

West Ham won at home again and will be comfortably top half for another week, while Southampton might become acquainted with the drop zone shortly.

West Ham United have improved on their impressive home record, and will find themselves comfortably in the top half of the table at the end of the week following their 4-1 win over Southampton at Upton Park. Bad defensive errors were the ultimate undoing of the Saints yet again, as they conceded on a set piece, a penalty, and on a bad giveaway in their own half.

Following a scoreless first half, Mark Noble's free kick, won by Andy Carroll, floated directly into the net after less than a minute of play in the second half. Disaster compounded for the Saints two minutes later when Guilherme Do Prado failed to control a backwards pass. Yossi Benayoun won the ball and slotted across to the back post, where Kevin Nolan was there to tap in the goal.

Southampton got back into the match in the 61st minute, when Adam Lallana finished off a nice move inside the box from a pass by Jay Rodriguez, but West Ham all but locked up the result 11 minutes later. Jose Fonte gave away a penalty with a foul in the box, and Noble converted to put West Ham up by two goals. Modibo Maiga put the exclaimation point on the result with an absolutely brilliant goal, curled around Artur Boruc at the back post from 12 yards out in the 86th minute.
