Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur: lineups

Stay connected with SB Nation

Sir Alex Ferguson appears to have backed up his warning that nobody at Manchester United would have a guaranteed place in the side as he gives Wayne Rooney a place on the substitutes bench to face Tottenham.

Robin Van Persie is chosen to lead the line instead, with Shinji Kagawa just behind. In defence, Jonny Evans replaces the injured Nemanja Vidic, with youngster Scott Wootton providing further backup on the bench.

In addition to Rooney, United have Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck to call upon from the substitutes. Despite impressing in midweek, Anderson and Cleverley are also reduced to a place among the subs.

Tottenham meanwhile continue with Brad Friedel in goal, Steven Caulker in defence, and Jermain Defoe as a lone striker, though Clint Dempsey is handed a start in midfield to provide support.

Manchester United: Lindegaard; Rafael, Evra, Ferdinand, Evans; Scholes, Nani, Giggs, Carrick; Kagawa; van Persie. Bench: De Gea, Anderson, Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck, Cleverley, Wootton.

Tottenham Hotspur: Friedel; Walker, Gallas, Vertonghen, Caulker; Sandro, Dembele; Lennon, Dempsey, Bale; Defoe. Bench: Lloris, Dawson, Falque, Huddlestone, Mason, Sigurdsson, Townsend.
