Sunderland took advantage of a Wigan red card early in the second half to defeat the Latics 1-0 at the Stadium of Light. Steven Fletcher scored the goal for Sunderland, continuing his ridiculous early season form for Martin O'Neill's side.
Sebastian Larrson had the best first half chance for the Black Cats in the 27th minute when his shot from outside the box was miraculously cleared off the line by Wigan defender Ivan Ramis. Arouna Kone had a great early chance for Wigan, getting on the end of a cross from Jean Beausejour right in front of goal. Sunderland keeper Simon Mignolet was up to the task though and made a nice save.
After a solid first half, Roberto Martinez was likely not thrilled with how the second half got started for his Wigan side.
Jordi Gomez made an ill advised challenge on Danny Rose, going studs up in to the defenders leg. Referee Howard Webb wasted little time showing Gomez a straight red and forcing Wigan to play the rest of the half a man down.
Sunderland wasted little time taking advantage. Stephane Sessegnon found James McClean making a run and the midfielder sent a wonderful low cross to Steven Fletcher who scored easily to continue his ridiculous early season form. It was Fletcher's fifth goal in four matches and he remains the only Sunderland player to have scored this season. Impressive stuff from the new signing.
