Well that was quick. We've had all of three minutes of play, but Tottenham Hotspur have taken the lead at Old Trafford thanks to Belgian centre back Jan Vertonghen. Manchester United will be horrified by their lacklustre defending, which allowed the big defender to charge into the penalty box and get away a shot. Johnny Evans threw himself at the ball, attempting to block Vertonghen's attempt, but only succeeded in diverting it past a wrong-footed Anders Lindegaard. I have literally no idea what any United player besides Evans was trying to do on that play.
It's not the scoreline anyone was expecting, considering that Manchester United haven't dropped points since their opening fixture of the 2012/13 season, but hey -- it's Spurs 1, United 0. There's plenty of time for a comeback, and the hosts have generally required a kick up the pants to get them going this year, but still, an awful start.
