Clinton Portis Injury Lands Him On Injured Reserve; 2010 Season Is Over

On Monday the Washington Post speculated that the groin injury to Redskins RB Clinton Portis could cost him the rest of his 2010 season. Portis originally injured his groin in early October and was expected to be out 4-6 weeks. He came back last week but quickly re-injured the groin. Despite that, he said earlier this week that he still hopes to play in Week 12.

"Hopefully, the swelling [will] go down," Portis said. "The MRI didn't reveal anything new, so that was a great thing. That was great news. Right now, [I'm] dealing with swelling, and hopefully that [will] go down."

That's not happening. The Washington Post now reports that Portis has been placed on injured reserve ending his 2010 season with the Redskins. The loss of Portis definitely hurts the Redskins but it's really nothing new considering he's played in just five games this year.

He ends the season with 227 yards on 54 carries -- both career lows. He's now played in just 13 games in the last two seasons.

The Redskins will now look to Keiland Williams and James Davis at running back next week, as Ryan Torian is a "long shot" to play in Week 12 because of an injured hamstring.

Fantasy Football Week 5 News: Clinton Portis Out 4-6 Weeks With Groin Injury

Earlier this week Redskins RB Clinton Portis said he didn't think he would be able to play on Sunday against the Packers because of a groin injury he suffered against the Eagles last week.

He'll definitely be out on Sunday -- and maybe for at least the next three after that.

Portis is out 4-6 weeks with a third degree separation of the groin.

That means he'll miss at least Week 5-8 against the Packers, Colts, Bears and Lions. In Week 9, the Redskins have a bye, which could give him time to heal.

This means that Ryan Torain now opens as the starting running back after being called up to the active roster just a few weeks ago. Torain has been averaging over four yards per carry in backup duty to Portis over the last two weeks.

Fantasy Football Week 5: Clinton Portis May Be Out Against The Packers

Redskins running back Clinton Portis was injured last week against the Eagles causing him to leave the game. His replacement, Ryan Torain, to rush for 70 yards on 18 carries.

So will Portis be back in your fantasy football lineup next week against the Packers? Don't count on it.

Speaking to 106.7 The Fan, Portis suggested he wouldn't be playing on Sunday because of a groin injury.

"I don't think the team would even let me attempt to go and play on Sunday," Portis said to co-hosts Mike Wise and Holden Kushner. "But who knows."

This is an easy enough fix: Grab Ryan Torain off the waiver wire.

After the last two weeks, he's probably already been snatched up but Torain would be a decent start in place of Portis. He's shown he can handle the load and can at times be just as (if not more) effective than Portis.

It sounds like Portis won't be out long, if he does indeed miss Sunday's game against the Packers, but groin injuries tend to hang around for a while. His health should be closely monitored for the rest of the season.
