Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson continued his wrecking ball of a season on Monday Night Football as the Lions improved to 5-0 with a 24-13 victory over the Chicago Bears. The man they call Megatron hauled in five passes for 130 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was Johnson's ninth of the season, setting a record for most touchdowns through five games. He did not continue his streak of 2+ touchdowns, but I suppose he is not perfect.
While this story stream is more about big under the radar fantasy performances, there's nothing wrong with recognizing the dominance of Megatron. His touchdown pace took a bit of a dive from 32, but even still, he is going to put up some crazy numbers this season.
His performance against the Bears actually did not require many of his super human skills as even the touchdown reception came more due to a poor defensive scheme. Nonetheless, he remains arguably the best fantasy wide receiver out there thanks to his touchdowns. Wes Welker is rolling up the yards and remains the best receiver in points per reception leagues. However, in traditional leagues, Johnson is near the top of the leaderboard.
As the Lions move into week six against the San Francisco 49ers, Johnson faces a secondary that has played better the last two weeks, but still has some holes. He likely will face off with Carlos Rogers for some stretch of the game. Rogers is off to the best start of his career with three interceptions (tied for the NFL lead) and has led the 49ers secondary thus far. Even still, expect more big numbers from this freakish wide receiver.
