Rashard Mendenhall Injury Update: Steelers RB Not On Injury Report

Stay connected with SB Nation

In an important bit of "non"-news, Rashard Mendenhall was not listed on the PIttsburgh Steelers Wednesday practice participation report. His absence from the injury report would indicate that barring any sort of unexpected setback, Mendenahll is likely in line to return to his starting running back role.

While it is good that he might be returning to that role, that does not necessarily mean he will be any more productive than he was prior to his hamstring injury. Mendenhall is averaging three yards per rush and simply has not been able to get going with any consistency. His two rushing touchdowns have helped his fantasy value, but even then his best fantasy performance was a 13.8 point day against the Seahawks.

This week, the Steelers face a Jaguars team that isn't particularly good, but that has done a solid job against the rush. Coach Mike Tomlin has actually been relatively non-committal as to Mendenhall's exact role now that he is healthy. That could mean Isaac Redman and Jonathan Dwyer grab some carries away from Mendenhall. It could also mean nothing and we will see him carrying the load. We will have to wait and see how practice goes this week to determine what kind of role he will be in on Sunday.
