The San Diego Chargers dropped a 24-17 defeat to the Oakland Raiders Thursday evening and Philip Rivers had another "conflicted" performance. On the one hand, Rivers is creating fantasy value as he posts some solid counting stats. On the other hand, when it comes to leading his team to real world victories, he continues to struggle through his worst season as a starting QB.
Thursday evening, Rivers threw for 274 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, and lost one fumble. For fantasy purposes, that equates out to approximately 15 fantasy points in a basic four-point per TD league. That is not a fantastic performance, but depending on the rest of your team, it is not exactly awful.
That might best describe his evening against the Oakland Raiders. Rivers completed only 49% of his passes as he was roughed up all night long. The Raiders pass rush brought the heat on a regular basis and Rivers had very little time to get settled in the pocket. He was forced to hurry many of his throws, leading to the accuracy issues.
At this point, Rivers remains a decent enough fantasy QB option, but his high status is falling fast and furious. He was outperformed by Carson Palmer Thursday evening, and things don't get any easier when he faces the Bears on the road next week. If you have another QB option, it might be time to consider benching Rivers if you haven't already.
