The San Diego Chargers running back situation has been in flux for much of this season as either Ryan Mathews or Mike Tolbert has dealt with injury issues off and on all season. The fluid situation continues as it looks like Ryan Mathews will be unable to play this Sunday. Mathews sat out practice on Thursday.
A week after Mike Tolbert was out, Mathews suffered a groin injury that led to third string running back Curtis Brinkley putting on a bit of a show on Monday Night Football. Naturally, Brinkley suffered a concussion late in the game and has not been cleared to return to practice. Mike Tolbert has been a full participant this week and would appear to be the likely starter on Sunday.
If both Mathews and Brinkley are unavailable, that means Tolbert would get most of the touches at running back. Jacob Hester would likely be worked in for some touches as well, but those are the only two options the Chargers have right now. They would likely sign Jordan Todman off the practice squad as insurance. Tolbert is not a fantastic option against the Packers, but if the Chargers are going to pull the upset, they will need to control the clock with Tolbert. This could bode well for his fantasy value.
