Ryan Mathews Injury Update: Limited On Monday, But Expected To Play On Thursday Night Football

Stay connected with SB Nation

The San Diego Chargers conducted a walkthrough on Monday as they prepare for Thursday Night Football against the Oakland Raiders. Running back Ryan Mathews was limited in the walkthrough, but the Chargers reportedly have plenty of optimism that Mathews will be able to play on Thursday.

Mathews sat out Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers with a groin injury and Mike Tolbert took virtually all the carries. Tolbert put together a solid 4.4 yards per carry clip in the loss and emerged unscathed himself from the game. Mathews could very well regain his starting role, but given the short week, a platoon of some sort with Tolbert seems more logical.

The Chargers face a Raiders rush defense that has struggled a bit and is coming off an awful performance against the Denver Broncos. Willis McGahee rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in helping lead the Broncos to victory. Such a performance would seem to bode well for which ever back leads the way for San Diego. We'll have update practice participation reports Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.
