The Detroit Lions elected to hold Calvin Johnson out from Wednesday's first practice of the week. There is no word yet on whether it's an actual injury or simply a case of Johnson resting up from a physical first game of the season. The Lions held off a late Buccaneers rally to win 27-20 and Johnson was pivotal to that. Johnson finished the game with six catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns and had to get fairly physical as Megatron is wont to do.
More than likely Johnson is simply getting some veterans preference, which he has earned with hard work and dominant play early in his career. Teams will often give veterans a light day on Wednesday and work them in a bit more on Thursday. While some veterans will practice through the soreness, it is a smart idea to not get too banged up. And after all, when the easiest play in your play book is throw it up and I'll catch it, a little rest could do Megatron some good. We'll check back on Thursday with the next practice participation report.
