Alex Smith was incredible on Monday night, throwing 18-of-19 for 232 yards and three touchdowns. We break down the fantasy implications.
Alex Smith was outstanding on Monday Night Football, going 18-for-19 passing for 232 yards and three touchdowns to help the San Francisco 49ers dismantle the Arizona Cardinals. He had a 157.1 quarterback rating for the game, falling just shot of a perfect 158.3 rating.
It was Smith's best outing since throwing for 303 yards and three touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5. More impressively, he torched a Cardinals defense that had allowed just seven passing touchdowns on the season heading into the game.
Fantasy Impact: There aren't enough superlatives to describe Smith's performance on Monday night. Sure, he didn't quite hit the video game numbers that Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees and Tom Brady are capable of posting on a weekly basis, but Smith quieted a lot of the naysayers who believe he isn't an NFL starter.
Smith had two bad performances prior to Monday, however, so don't go rushing him into your starting fantasy lineup just yet. Still, he proved he can be a capable QB2 in two-quarterback leagues, and a safe backup in standard formats.
