Fantasy Football PPR Target Report, Week 5: Tight Ends

Larry French - Getty Images

Future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez is the ageless wonder at tight end, and he put up another big game on Sunday. Check out who the other top targeted tight ends were in Week 5.

Not many tight ends were drafted early in 2012 drafts, but Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Gates and Jimmy Graham all were drafted in the second round or a few rounds later, and all three disappointed fantasy owners in Week 5. Gronkowski, fighting a hip injury, was targeted just five times; Gates was targeted seven times, and Graham received just two targets, and none scored a touchdown.

Let's take a look at the tight ends who were targeted the most in Week 5:

Hitting the Bullseye

Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons

Gonzalez is a lock for the Hall of Fame, and every year fantasy owners keep waiting for him to slow down, but he doesn't. He is unowned in my 10-team, three-receiver fantasy football league, but I doubt he makes it through Week 6 without being picked up as he gets to face the Raiders next Sunday. Gonzalez caught 13 of his 14 targets vs the Redskins on Sunday, good for 123 yards and yet another touchdown. He has double-digit targets in three of his five games thus far -- 6, 10, 12, 5 and 14 -- with 39 receptions for 388 yards and four touchdowns.

Jacob Tamme, Denver Broncos

Many, including me, felt that Tamme would be one of Peyton Manning's favorite targets this season, but Tamme has received double-digit targets just twice this season, including Week 5. Tamme grabbed six of his 11 targets, but managed just 50 yards on those receptions, and did not reach the end zone. Tamme has scored just one touchdown this season, and has yet to go more than 50 yards in receptions.

Missing the Mark

Dennis Pitta, Baltimore Ravens

After starting the season with 31 targets and two scores in the first three weeks, Pitta's name has not been called too often in the Ravens' air attack. He was targeted just four times on Sunday, catching three balls for 22 yards and no touchdowns. Over his last two games, he has been targeted just six times by quarterback Joe Flacco, as Flacco has been looking to thrown the ball downfield to wide receivers Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin a bit more.

Jimmy Graham, NO, and Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots

Graham and Gronkowski were the top two tight ends heading into 2012 fantasy drafts, and both disappointed in Week 5. Gronkowski has scored three touchdowns thus far in 2012, but has caught just 23 balls on 34 targets this season, good for 295 yards and three touchdowns. Graham, on the other hand, received just two targets on Sunday, catching one ball for 4 yards. He has scored three times this season, but has not scored double-digit fantasy points since Week 2.
