US PRESSWIRE
A brutal 3rd quarter can be forgiven with a late touchdown throw.
If Cam Newton wasn't intimidated by Peyton Manning today, he should have been. Newton may have had a rookie season better than what Manning had, but he has fallen way behind as a sophomore.
After throwing for over 4,000 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2011, Newton has only six touchdowns and eight interceptions this season. He's also been limited to four rushing touchdowns after scoring a quarterback-record 14 last year. After an early touchdown throw to Greg Olsen, Newton and the offense were completely shut down to start the second half.
The Panthers gained a total of nine yards on their first six drives combined.
Newton rebounded on the seventh drive, though, when Carolina drove 77 yards and ended with another touchdown strike to Olsen. Overall, Newton has thrown for 241 yards, 2 TD and 1 INT. His ground game has remained quiet, though, gaining only 7 yards on 4 carries. It's still one of the only things he does better than Manning, though.
