Wes Welker quiet for fantasy owners despite 9 targets vs. Texans

Jared Wickerham

Wes Welker had just three receptions for 52 yards despite seeing nine targets during the Patriots' win over the Texans on Monday Night Football. We break down the fantasy implications.

Wes Welker had just three receptions for 52 yards during the New England Patriots' win over the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football. He saw nine targets on the night, however, which was tied with Brandon Lloyd for second-most on the team.

Welker struggled to find single coverage, as the Texans focused their attention on slowing down the wideout. He had his fewest receptions since catching three passes in the season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Fantasy Impact: Welker has had fewer yards in just two games this season, so suffice it to say Monday night was disappointing for owners. He was just about the only Patriots skill player to not have a huge fantasy night. The Texans left Lloyd and Donte Stallworth in one-on-one coverage throughout the night, resulting in big plays for Tom Brady downfield.

Fantasy owners should not fret too much over the dud. Performances like this are a rarity for Welker. He had at least 71 yards receiving in each of his last four games, and was coming off a 12-reception, 103-yard performance in Week 13. Welker remains a decent WR2/WR3 in standard formats, and is even more valuable in PPR leagues.
