Saints vs. Cowboys fantasy football projections: Drew Brees, Tony Romo and DeMarco Murray

Chris Graythen

We put the fantasy numbers under a microscope for this Sunday’s match up between the New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys.

Without a doubt the key matchup in this contest will occur at the quarterback position where Drew Brees and Tony Romo will be sure to rack up the yards and fantasy points necessary to make their owners' dreams of a fantasy championship a reality. Romo has thrown for over 300 yards in four of his last five contests, while Brees has accomplished the same feat in three straight games, not to mention he threw four-touchdown passes against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15. Though the pass defense of the Cowboys is quite a bit better than that of the Bucs, both quarterbacks should be in for a fantasy feast this Sunday.

The expected airshow should work to the benefit of receiver Marques Colston, who hasn't had 100 yards receiving in a game since back in Week 5. Tight end Jimmy Graham should also be able to rack up some fantasy points for the Saints down the middle of the field, although he has been held out of the end zone in four straight games. The Cowboys' Dez Bryant has been nothing short of awesome lately, scoring touchdowns in six straight games (eight total scores) even while playing with a broken index finger against the Steelers in Week 15. Although he has been held under 60 yards receiving in the last two games, look for Bryant to eclipse the 100-yard plateau against the seldom feared Saints pass defense.

At the running back position, the Saints will more than likely give the lion's share of the carries to Mark Ingram while Darren Sproles takes a smaller number of carries and acts as their primary pass catcher again out of the backfield. Sproles has touchdowns in back to back games (two rushing, one receiving) while Ingram managed 90 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown in Week 15. On the other hand, DeMarco Murray has impressed for the Cowboys after missing an extended period of time this season with a nagging ankle injury. Murray has touchdowns in three straight games since returning from the injury and averaged a healthy 5.8 yards per carry against the historically tough Pittsburgh Steelers defense.

Although the Cowboys clearly have the advantage in terms of winning this game based on their superior defense, the talent on both squads should be able to put up big fantasy numbers in Week 16.
