Rex Ryan says the Jets have a top 5 defense. We break down the fantasy implications.
New York Jets head coach isn't going to say that the Jets will have the best defense in the NFL, but he's willing to say that it is top 5: "Granted, I said top five. That’s a given. I don’t care who’s out there. . . That’s how confident we are. We have a great system, we have a great group of players and we have a great group of coaches." The Jets have finished in the top five in total defense for each of the last three seasons, though they were 20th in scoring defense in 2011.
Fantasy Implications: When it comes to fantasy team defense, there are a number of factors that matter but "total defense" isn't usually one of them. Points, sacks, and turnovers are much more important and last season the Jets had 35 team sacks but nobody had more than the six by Aaron Maybin. Their 19 interceptions were 10th best in the NFL but they had just two returned for touchdowns. As they stand as of last year, they are a good defense but not an elite one that you must draft.
