ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Minnesota Vikings plan on holding RB Adrian Peterson out of Friday's preseason game against the Chargers. Peterson's 2011 season was cut short by a torn ACL, and his rehab process has been slow but steady. Schefter also reports that he expects Peterson to "argue his case" for getting playing time, indicating that it's not a final decision yet.
Analysis: The Vikings have been so cautious with Peterson's recovery we shouldn't be surprised that they're not rushing him back into game action. They've only just let him into contact practices, and even if he does play on Friday it would be limited at best. There's nothing to indicate that Purple Jesus won't be ready for the regular season, but he has been slipping down draft boards, and warrants enough caution that you'll definitely want to grab Toby Gerhart as a handcuff.
