Editor's Update: Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith did not practice on Friday, and is not expected to play in Sunday night's preseason game against the New York Jets, according to the team's official Twitter account.
Update No. 2: Smith was still on crutches Friday, another indication that he is almost assuredly out for Sunday's preseason game. He remains on antiobiotics for a foot infection and is being closely monitored by team doctors.
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith's infected foot is improving, but coach Ron Rivera indicates that the team plans to be cautious with the 12-year veteran. According to The Charlotte Observer, Rivera says Smith's foot improved after a round of antibiotics. A decision on whether Smith will play in Sunday's preseason game against the New York Jets is expected later on Friday. Smith missed practice Wednesday and Thursday.
Analysis: It would be surprising if Smith played on Sunday, but fantasy owners should not worry if he is held out of the game. The regular season is still weeks away and there is no reason to rush Smith back to the field. Smith will still be the No. 1 target in Carolina's passing attack and should be considered a high No. 2 receiver by fantasy owners on draft day.
