I got a question on Twitter the other day asking, "would you really take Hakeem Nicks as the third WR off the board?" Even though I have Nicks on 75 percent of my teams, I replied that he was never the third wide receiver off the board. Sometimes people get so caught up in the rankings that they really forget why they're designed.
The way I've always viewed rankings would be if I'm in a league with 11 other Mike Gallaghers. By the way, this would be a terrible movie, even if it starred Michael Keaton. But I digress. It's based on how I perceive all the drafts I've ever seen and which players I value the most while taking into account all the factors: position scarcity, schedule, risk, upside, floor and anything else we think about when drafting a player.
The bottom line is that the ultimate goal of your draft is to get the most value out of every pick in your draft. For example, let's say you're looking at a pick towards the end of the second round of your draft and have decided on Doug Martin or Jimmy Graham. If you know for a fact that Jimmy Graham won't make it back to you, then you should take Graham even though you have Martin higher (which I do). This is obvious to most people. I'm aware, but sometimes I even can't risk missing out on my favorite players and ignore this well-known paradigm.
