Santonio Holmes will miss the New York Jets' preseason opener after injuring his ribs this past Saturday, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports. While X-rays showed that Holmes did not suffer a fracture, the team is being understandably cautious with the veteran wide receiver. The Jets are set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Friday.
Analysis: While missed reps are never a good thing for any player, Holmes has plenty of experience catching passes from Mark Sanchez. The good news is that the injury shouldn't be a long-term issue for Holmes or the Jets. In the short-term, New York will have to make due somehow with a very thin receiving corps. Chaz Schilens (groin) and Jeremy Kerley (hamstring) have both been limited by injuries in training camp.
