Fantasy Football PPR Target Report, Week 2: Running Backs

Week 2 is in the books, and there was only two running backs with 10 or more targets on Sunday. One of them was Saints' running back Darren Sproles, who could lead the NFL in receptions if the Saints' defense continues to give up points like a wickety, wickety WAC team in college football. One running back emerged in Week 2 and that was Browns' first-round pick Trent Richardson, and he has quickly become an running back 1 after two weeks in the NFL.

Let's take a look at the top running back targets for Week 2:

Hitting the Bullseye

Darren Sproles, NO

Sproles was targeted 14 times by Drew Brees on Sunday, catching 13 balls for 128 yards receiving, which tied for fifth among all receivers this week. Sproles has already been targeted 22 times this season, good for 18 receptions, but he has yet to score a touchdown. That should change as soon as Week 3 when the Saints host the Kansas City Chiefs, who had trouble stopping C.J. Spiller on Sunday.

Trent Richardson, CLE

Richardson had a breakout game in Week 2, rushing for 109 yards and scoring two touchdowns. But more important for PPR league owners, he was targeted five times in the passing game, catching four balls for 36 yards and a touchdown. I see him being targeted more by quarterback Brandon Weeden as the season goes along once they establish a comfort level with each other.

Missed the Mark

Darren McFadden, OAK

Not only did DMC run for just 22 yards on 11 carries on Sunday, he caught only two of his seven targets for 19 yards. A week after being targeted 18 times on Monday night, good for 13 receptions, quarterback Carson Palmer looked to get his wide receivers more involved in the offense in Week 2. Fantasy owners, including this one, hope McFadden can have a breakout game in Week 3.

Jamaal Charles, KC

Charles was inexplicably absent in the KC offense on Sunday, and we learned yesterday that he was dealing with a minor knee injury. The injury explains why he had only nine touches, six of which were in the running game. With the Chiefs down by three touchdowns, one would think that Charles would have been more present in the KC passing game, but he was targeted only four times, good for three receptions and 19 yards. If Charles is healthy in Week 3, he is a must start against the terrible Saints defense.
