Rashard Mendenhall could start the Pittsburgh Steelers' season opener Sunday against the Denver Broncos, head coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday. Mendenhall reportedly looked impressive after returning to practice while recovering from the torn ACL he suffered late last season. Isaac Redman is also vying for the starting job but has been slowed by a mild ankle sprain late in preseason.
Analysis: The Steelers' running back situation for Week 1 is still as unclear as it has been all offseason. Recent reports suggest that Mendenhall has a leg up in the long-term, however, and is recovering much faster than expected. Against the Broncos, Redman is likely the safer option if you have to go with one of the two. A 8:20 p.m. ET start doesn't do owners any favors if there is a game-time decision, however, so you may be better off leaving both out of the lineup this week.
