Joseph Fauria rewards his few fantasy owners with 3 TDs

Matt Sullivan

The undrafted rookie tight end has proved to be a goal-line monster for the Lions. We break down the fantasy implications.

In three of his six games this season, Detroit Lions tight end Joseph Fauria has zero catches on zero targets. In his other three games, the undrafted rookie has seven catches for 68 yards. And five touchdowns. Three of those scores came on Sunday, as Fauria was the Lions leading scorer in their 31-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Fauria, a rookie out of UCLA, caught the Lions' first score of the game in the first quarter, then added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a go-ahead 23-yard score to make the score 21-17.

Fantasy impact: Fauria is a giant on the field, the same height as New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham and an inch taller than Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots. His two scores before Sunday's game both came from the five-yard line or closer, with quarterback Matthew Stafford looking for him at the goal line. Fauria had one goal-line look Sunday, but his other two scores came from much further out (one from 10 yards, one from 23).

The Lions' normal No. 2 tight end, Tony Scheffler, missed Sunday's game with a concussion, giving Fauria more of a chance in the offense. As he develops, Fauria could surpass Scheffler and, in theory, even disappointing Brandon Pettigrew on the team's depth chart. That's a down-the-road scenario, though. For now, he's someone to keep a close eye on, but it's hard to except this level of production.
