As we all know, anything can happen in fantasy football. This past week was a prime example, as we saw great performances from some backup quarterbacks. Even more surprising was that they were able to outperform many top ten fantasy quarterbacks.
Last season gave us a good look at Nick Foles. He started six games and passed for more than 300 yards in two of those starts. Many have thought that Foles in the new Eagles offense would be like oil and water, they wouldn't mix. Overlooked is the fact that Chip Kelly's offense is flexible and plays to the strengths of its quarterback. We were able to observe that against Tampa. Foles passed for close to 300 yards, three touchdowns and ran for a score. He looked very comfortable running the offense and the Eagles running game opened up the play action pass. Right now it looks like he'll start again this week against the Cowboys. If he continues to play this well, the starting job may be his permanently.
Thaddeus Lewis was equally impressive. Lewis was able to take the Bills offense to the brink of victory against a strong Cincinnati defense. This was accomplished without the Bills best receiver, Stevie Johnson. Coming off the practice squad, Lewis passed for two touchdowns and ran for another. He didn't come out of the game unscathed. He suffered a sprained foot but looks like he'll be able to start against the Dolphins in Week 7. Unlike Foles, I have a feeling that Lewis will not score as many points in his second start. Johnson may be out again and Buffalo may look to its running attack to take the pressure off of Lewis.
Mike Glennon showed why he was the third quarterback selected this year in the draft. He passed for 273 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. It was a vast improvement over his first start and showed that he could click with Vincent Jackson. Glennon will face Atlanta this week and they have been struggling on defense. I'm sure Doug Martin will be used extensively but Glennon should have a few chances for some big plays.
As my sleeper of the week, I have to go with Nick Foles. He has a legitimate chance to put up points comparable to a Top 10 quarterback in Week 7. Dallas has been allowing opposing quarterbacks to post some big numbers, and they'll be without DeMarcus Ware. For those who are looking to replace Drew Brees or Terrelle Pryor because of the bye week, Foles is the best solution to the problem.
