Full disclosure -- it's going to be slim pickings in Week 8 for fantasy owners who are committed to streaming defenses from week to week. Unfortunately, there is just no fantasy wealth to be had from the ineptitude of the Jaguars, Rams or Buccaneers, who all play defenses that will not likely be on the waiver wire this week.
Instead, while happy owners of the Chiefs, Panthers and Seahawks enjoy what should be another week of monster outputs, streamers will have to dig deep to find fantasy points. Let's take a look at some options that could still prevail in what looks like a tough week at first glance:
New Orleans Saints (vs. Buffalo Bills): So much for the Bills losing a step without E.J. Manuel. In every game the Bills have played this season, they have posted point totals between 20 and 24 points, a trend that new quarterback Thad Lewis has been able to maintain after facing the Dolphins and Bengals in his only starts of the season.
What Lewis hasn't done, however, is take an aggressive approach. He is averaging just 6.53 yards per attempt this season in closely contested matchups. He could be in a different game situation when the Bills travel to face Drew Brees and the Saints, who can easily put a team away early. If that's the case, Lewis may have to take more shots, and in turn could give the ball away with more frequency than he has thus far. On the flipside, Rob Ryan's defense has taken the ball away 12 times through six games and ought to pad that total if it takes the Bills' identity away by burying them with a big lead. Owned in just 20 percent of Yahoo! leagues, fantasy owners could do much worse than take a flier on the Saints in Week 8.
Philadelphia Eagles (vs. New York Giants): When these two teams squared off in MetLife Stadium in Week 5, the Eagles cruised to a 36-21 victory after forcing four Giants turnovers. That included three Eli Manning interceptions, and the football world knows at this point that this nightmare game was no anomaly for the team that leads the NFL in giveaways.
The Giants' outlook doesn't look any better in the most hostile of environments this week, and despite having the potential to put up plenty of yards and points, the Giants have been more than glad to award fantasy points to opposing defenses in the form of turnovers. Until that trend is bucked for good, the Eagles defense is worth Week 8 consideration and is owned in just 4 percent of Yahoo! leagues.
Green Bay Packers (vs. Minnesota Vikings): This may be a more difficult defense to obtain for owners since the Packers are owned in 55 percent of Yahoo! leagues, but it's an option more than worth exploring if it is available. Though the Packers have struggled to notch takeaways or find much of a pass rush without Clay Matthews and Nick Perry, they have been stout in other facets.
The Packers have allowed just two touchdowns over the past two weeks combined, and their third-ranked rushing defense will not be a welcome matchup for the Vikings. With Josh Freeman slated to make his second start for the team, he will need to demonstrate a quicker learning curve if he has any chance of keeping pace with the Packers' high-flying offense. Add it all up, and it makes for a potentially huge fantasy output from a defense that could be acquired on the cheap in leagues everywhere.
