Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 17: Alex Smith can't be trusted

John Rieger-USA TODAY Sports

Alex Smith struggled against the Colts last week and the Chiefs are expected to rest their starters for the season finale. We break down the fantasy implications.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been one of the more inconsistent fantasy players this season. Just one week after throwing five touchdowns to Jamaal Charles, Smith struggled against the Indianapolis Colts, throwing for 153 yards, no touchdowns and an interception in a 23-7 loss.

Since being acquired from the San Francisco 49ers, Smith has been a steady game manager, but that often limits his fantasy upside. Through 15 games, he has completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading the Chiefs to a wild-card spot.

Fantasy impact: The 11-4 Chiefs are the only team locked into a seed heading into the regular season finale against the San Diego Chargers. Coach Andy Reid is planning to play the backups in this meaningless game, making Smith too unreliable to count on this week. Chase Daniel could end up playing the majority of the game. Neither player is a recommended fantasy option with championships on the line.
