Rob Gronkowski placed on injured reserve, fantasy season is over

Gronk's season is officially over, getting placed on IR with a torn ACL and MCL. We break down the fantasy implications.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was officially placed on season-ending injury reserve with a torn ACL and MCL.

Gronkowski suffered the devastating knee injury in Sunday's comeback win over the Cleveland Browns. After catching a pass over the middle, he took a helmet to the knee from T.J. Ward. Gronkowski crumbled to the turf and had to be carted off the field. An MRI on Monday confirmed the torn ligaments. Gronkowski's injury-marred season ends with yet another offseason of long rehab ahead of him. He finishes 2013 with 39 catches for 592 yards and four touchdowns in seven games.

Fantasy impact: It's a huge blow not only to the Patriots' playoff hopes, but to fantasy owners hoping to ride Gronk the next two weeks. If you need help at the tight end position, take a look at Dennis Pitta if he's still available on the wire. Pitta made his season debut and showed no ill effects from his dislocated hip. He'll be a strong fantasy play the rest of the season.

For Dynasty owners, it's going to be another frustrating waiting game over the offseason. Gronkowski will likely miss training camp for the second year in a row and is once again a question mark for Week 1 of the 2014 season. It's fair to wonder if he will be the same after so many surgeries in just a few years.
