Geno Smith seems likely to start, fantasy owners should still avoid

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Geno Smith seems likely to start Week 1 for the Jets. We break down the fantasy implications.

Geno Smith seems poised to be the Week 1 starting quarterback for the New York Jets.  First, there's a report that Mark Sanchez won't be ready to play due to his injury to his right shoulder. Second, there's all the reports that have come out over the last several weeks suggesting that the Jets want any excuse to name Smith the starter.

Sanchez has generally out-played Smith throughout the preseason, but the team was still hesitant to name him the starter. It's unlikely that Sanchez has turned over a new leaf and will suddenly be a great quarterback, but he's probably much more suited than Smith at this point in the rookie's career.

If Sanchez isn't ready due to his injury, then Smith will get the start for Week 1. That's not even up for debate at this point.

Fantasy Impact: Fantasy owners should stay far, far away from the Jets quarterbacks until it's clear what's happening. Sanchez might be able to provide more touchdowns if he is the starter this season, but Smith might have more yardage overall and should have the ball longer as he might turn out to be less-prone to turnovers. Maybe ... just maybe they might have a decent fantasy quarterback once it's all figured out.
