San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick will likely play just a series or two in Thursday's preseason opener, while running back Frank Gore could sit it out. Coach Jim Harbaugh announced the plans for playing time on Wednesday. The 49ers face the Denver Broncos.
Kaepernick, who threw for 1,814 yards last season after taking over the starting job during the season, is less experienced than Gore and likely could still use a few reps to get his preseason started. Gore, meanwhile, will again carry a heavy workload this season and there is little reason to expose the veteran to unnecessary hits.
Fantasy Impact: Kaepernick and Gore will both be early round targets on Draft Day and fantasy owners don't want either to get hurt before the season. Kaepernick has turned into a No. 1 option at quarterback and should improve this season as the starter to begin this season.
Gore remains a steady fantasy option and is a fringe No. 1/2 running back in most formats.
