Hakeem Nicks uncertain for Giants preseason opener

The Star-Ledger-USA TODAY Sports

Head Coach Tom Coughlin told Giants reporter Ralph Vacchiano that he was uncertain of Nicks' status for Saturday's preseason opener. We break down the fantasy implications.

Giants beat writer Ralph Vacchiano reported that head coach Tom Coughlin was uncertain of wide receiver Hakeem Nicks' status for the team's preseason opener at Pittsburgh on Saturday.

The Giants haven't been able to get their top receivers on the field much this summer with Victor Cruz initially holding out for a better contract, and with Nicks being banged-up throughout camp. Nicks is apparently nursing a groin injury, which is concerning to Giants fans and fantasy owners after Nicks posted career lows in yards and touchdowns in 2012. That year, Nicks dealt with a broken foot and a knee injury which ultimately required surgery.

Fantasy Spin: Because Nicks couldn't seem to get a clean bill of health a season ago, it's not surprising to see him take things slowly with the season just over a month away. He told the New York Daily News that he could play if this was the regular season and that missing practices-- and potentially a preseason game-- are strictly precautionary. When healthy, Nicks has the potential as a WR1 and is a superb goal line threat. Despite his absences, we aren't hitting the panic button just yet. In the meantime, second-year wideout Rueben Randle has shined with the extra available reps and is worth keeping an eye on as preseason gets under way.
