Philip Rivers opens season with strong fantasy performance

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers had a strong performance in his season opener against the Houston Texans, throwing four touchdown passes. We break down the fantasy implications.

The San Diego Chargers blew a big lead on Sunday, but a big piece of news has to be Philip Rivers' return to fantasy relevance. The Chargers quarterback threw four touchdown passes in the 31-28 loss.

Rivers only threw for 195 yards, but he was efficient with those yards, completing two touchdown passes to Eddie Royal, one to Ryan Mathews and one to Vincent Brown. He even added a career-long 18-yard rush, finishing with close to 22 points in standard leagues.

Fantasy Implications: The Texans defense had some injury issues in this game, but even still, a four touchdown performance is nice to see from Rivers. The Chargers QB had struggled recently, so signs of life are a plus. The Chargers entered the season with several question marks at wide receiver. For now it appears Rivers is happy to spread the ball around to all his receiving options.

The Chargers travel to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2. The Eagles were a ball-hawking defense early in Week 1 against Washington, but Robert Griffin III finished strong. It bodes well for Rivers, who is a solid matchup play if you a question mark at quarterback.
