Danny Amendola injury update: will not have hernia surgery, out for Week 3 vs. Bucs

Kevin Hoffman-USA TODAY Sports

Injury prone Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola will miss the team's Week 3 game against the Buccaneers. We discuss the fantasy implications.

New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola (groin) will not play in the team's Week 3 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as expected, but will not require sports hernia surgery, according to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald.

It was initially reported that Amendola would miss as many as six weeks with the injury.  Amendola had 10 catches for 104 yards in the Patriots' Week 1 win over the Buffalo Bills before leaving the game.

Fantasy impact: Amendola was acquired in an off-season trade with the St. Louis Rams for the purposes of replacing Wes Welker in the Pats' offense, running routes out of the slot. In terms of physical talent and ability he's more than capable of getting the job done, as evident in the fact he was targeted by quarterback Tom Brady 14 times in his first game as a Patriot. That said, fantasy owners should know by now that he's injury prone and Julian Edleman has been equally good filling in for Amendola. Overall though, the fact Amendola won't need surgery is definitely good news for his fantasy owners.
