Miles Austin ruled out, long-term fantasy value in question

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin is ruled out for Week 4 with a hamstring injury. We break down the fantasy implications.

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Miles Austin has been ruled out for Sunday's Week 4 matchup against the San Diego Chargers. Austin didn't practice at all this week with a strained left hamstring injury. He suffered the injury during the team's 31-7 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 3.

Austin is the No. 2 receiver behind Dez Bryant, but rookie Terrance Williams should step up in his place. Following Austin's injury, the initial thought was that the injury was minor, but there are some serious concerns based on his history. That being the fact that Austin has dealt with hamstring injuries multiple times over the past couple seasons in Dallas.

It's unclear how much Austin's injury can be related to past hamstring issues, but it makes sense for the team to keep him inactive on Sunday. Better to let him heal now than possibly losing him for an extended amount of time at this point.

Fantasy Impact: Obviously, Austin should ride your bench. Fantasy owners should also be concerned about the potential for the injury to become long term. Beneficiaries of this injury include Williams, and potentially Dwayne Harris. On the tight end side, Jason Witten could see an increased role, so start him if you have him. Williams just might be a smart option to pick up and start in the interim, especially if the injury ends up keeping Austin inactive for multiple games.
