Cordarrelle Patterson injury update: Rookie receiver more of a fantasy stash for now

Should you plug Cord into your lineup? - Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

Cordarrelle Patterson (back) is questionable for Sunday. We break down the fantasy implications.

Vikings receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (back) is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Lions. He was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but will play.

The Vikings took him in the first round in their efforts to replace Percy Harvin. They've used him in the slot on offense and have run some reverse plays to get the ball in his hands. He's still a little raw and with the way the team is going to go with Adrian Peterson all day, Patterson's value will lie mostly in the return game for now.

Fantasy impact: Christian Ponder has really struggled in getting the ball down the field, ranking 31st in the NFL in yards per attempt. What's more, Percy Harvin was on pace to lead all players in yards after the catch, so his lack of ability to stretch the field could make Ponder look more at the shorter options. Patterson is going to line up a in a few spots on the field, but his deep-play ability isn't likely to be on display to start the season. He's still a great player to stash in standard leagues, though. However, if your league rewards for return yards, Patterson is someone to consider in deeper formats.
