Tony Gonzalez scores for fantasy owners in Week 1 opener

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez is tackled by Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro - Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sport

The Falcons ageless tight end only had three receptions for 36 receiving yards, but did find the end zone in the Week 1 opener against the Saints. We bring the fantasy implications here.

Tony Gonzalez didn't catch a lot of passes or put up big receiving numbers in the season opener, but he did find the end zone for a score and nearly had another. In addition to the one touchdown, he had three receptions for 36 yards in what was a slow opener on offense for the Falcons. They only had two receiving touchdowns in a game against the New Orleans Saints where the offense was expected to do much better and Gonzalez had one of them. Gonzalez was targeted a total of six times on the day.

Fantasy impact: Gonzalez's ability to score in the red zone has traditionally been one of his strong suits and he didn't disappoint in that regard. This isn't a bad fantasy outing from the veteran, but fantasy owners crave more receiving yards. Still, Gonzalez had the touchdown and that meant a pretty good day for fantasy owners. He should still be considered a solid fantasy starter at tight end in all fantasy leagues. The Falcons host the Redskins in Week 2, who will be coming off a short week having played in the Monday night opener, and the Falcons' offense should be expected to perform much better.
