Phil Mickelson shot well through his first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, ending up with a 4-under, good enough for an eighth-place tie on the event leaderboard. Tom Gillis and Bill Haas finished their rounds 6-under and hold the lead, though Tom Lehman is also 6-under with two holes to go.
Mickelson secured an impressive platter of birdies on holes three, four, seven, 13, 15, and 17, but bogeyed consecutive holes to end his front nine and begin his back.
Chris Couch, Ben Crane, and Jason Both are sitting at 5-under, though Crane and Bohn have golf yet to play tonight. Vijay Singh is 2-under, Farmers Insurance Open-winner Bubba Watson is 1-under, and Fred Couples is among those who’ve just begun their evenings.
Chris Riley, Joe Ogilvie, Jeff Overton are the other 4-under golfers who’ve wrapped up their rounds, with Robert Allenby, Angel Cabrera, Brett Wetterich, and Jonathan Byrd joining Singh as 3-unders in the clubhouse.
