Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey put together another strong round on Saturday at the Waste Management Phoenix Open to take a one-shot lead into the third round of the weather-delayed tournament. After firing a first round 63, Gainey came back strong again on Saturday, finishing up a second round 65 to push his score to 14-under on the tournament. With unseasonably cold weather hitting Arizona, the Phoenix open won’t finish until Monday, at the earliest, after frost delays hampered the tournament earlier in the week.
Sitting one shot back of Gainey atop the leaderboard is Mark Wilson, whose second round 64 left him at 13-under for the tournament. Phil Mickelson, needing a third-place finish or better to pass Tiger Woods for No. 3 in the world, used solid putting to shoot a second round 65, putting him at 10-under for the tournament, four shots off the lead. Mickelson is joined at 10-under by Rickie Fowler, who shot a 62 after an opening round 70. Both sit in a tie for fifth-place ahead of Sunday’s third round.
Darkness delayed many on Saturday, as third round play began shortly after players finished their second rounds. The leaders, including Gainey, Mickelson, Fowler and others, are set to tee-off beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.
