The fourth-ever sudden death playoff at the Players Championship ended with K.J. Choi taking home the $1.71 million winner's share and 600 FedEx Cup points, topping David Toms after a clutch putting duel.
The players took to the daunting hole No. 17 and its island green, where Choi scored an impressive birdie during Sunday's regulation play. After a coin flip, sudden death began with Choi going first.
His 9 iron sent the ball safely onto the center of the green, with quite a bit of putting left to do. Toms countered with a shot just to the left of Choi's that rolled even closer to the hole, giving him the clear advantage in navigating downhill.
Choi's strike rolled a couple of cups to the left of the hole, giving Toms the chance to take the victory with one putt, but he missed by an inch or two to the left. Just a foot or two away, Toms rimmed his putt off the far side of the cup. He salvaged for bogey.
With the chance to win, Choi put the ball in the hole from about three feet away.
