Mike Whan is nothing if not determined, and the LPGA commissioner won’t quit trying to get his players a gig at Augusta National Golf Club.
Since taking over as head honcho of the women’s tour in 2010, Whan has regularly phoned the chair of the iconic home of the Masters, urging Billy Payne to host an event that would showcase his association's superstars.
Since women broke through the green jackets’ grass ceiling in August, perhaps the commish’s dogged efforts will finally pay off.
“It’s almost a funny thing. We have the same conversation every year, and at the end I say, ‘If this offends you and you want me to stop, I will,’” Whan said during a media day to promote the 2013 Founders Cup at Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix. “He’s a great guy, and he always says, ‘I get it. Talk to you next year.’”
Fingers crossed that Whan gets to see Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, and the rest of the luminaries on his tour tee it up at Bobby Jones’ lyrical bandbox before his tenure ends. If not, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.
“I don’t know if it will happen while I’m commissioner,” Whan said. “But I’m not going to be the guy who is afraid to call.”
So, Billy, call him? Maybe?
