Northern Trust Open 2012: Bill Haas Wins Sudden Death Playoff Over Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley

The 2012 Northern Trust Open came down to a sudden death playoff Sunday after Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley birdied on the 72nd hole of the tournament to draw even with Bill Haas in the clubhouse. The excitement didn't end after regulation.

All three golfers had long putt opportunities for birdie to win the first hole of the sudden death playoff. Keegan Bradley came the closest, even beginning to celebrate prematurely as his ball touched the lip of the cup before going wide off from roughly 10 feet away.

All three players misfired off the tee on the second playoff hole. Mickelson landed in the rough to the right while Bradley landed a few feet further up in a bunker. Haas hit into the trees to the left of the hole, but the ball luckily rolled through with hitting any obstructions. All three players landed roughly 30 yards from the hole.

Bradley hit the best shot by far on his second shot, putting the ball just off the green, roughly 12 feet from the hole. Haas laid up to about 40 feet from the pin on the green on his second shot, while Mickelson's ball rolled off into a bunker on the other side of the pin.

Bradley seemingly had the apparent leg up, but Haas bombed his birdie putt into the cup to turn the tables. Bradley's putt to tie once again barely glided by the lip of the hole, giving a Haas a major victory in California.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley Birdie On 18 To Force Playoff

Bill Haas took the lead at the end of the front nine before promptly giving it back to Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley with consecutive bogeys on the 12th and 13th holes. He was seemingly out of the running at the 2012 Northern Trust Open, but Bradley and Mickelson faltered on the putting green in the back nine, recording two bogies each. Haas birdied on 17 to make himself the leader going into the clubhouse with two holes left to play for the final pairing.

Mickelson faced long odds, down a stroke to Haas and needing a 27-foot putt for birdie on 18 to force a playoff. He put just enough on the ball from the edge of the green, however, causing an uproar from the gallery as the ball fell into the cup. Not to be outdone, Bradley gave an emphatic fist pump as his birdie putt rolled in, albeit from roughly half the distance as Mickelson's.

All three golfers finished regulation at 7-under. It has been a back-and-forth battle all day. Stay tuned as we give you more from the tournament.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley Hold One-Stroke Lead Over Bill Haas

Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley briefly gave up the lead to Bill Haas at the end of nine holes on Sunday. Through 14 holes, the pair find themselves in the exact same spot as they were at the start of the day, tied atop the standings at the 2012 Northern Trust Open.

Both have shot even on the day to hold Bill Haas at bay by one stroke for the moment. Haas shot 3-under through 10 holes to take the lead, but back-to-back bogies on holes 12 and 13 knocked him from the top. Five players are tied in fourth place, led by a hard-charging Sergio Garcia who finished at 7-under for the day and 5-under for the tournament.

Joining Garcia at two shots back from the lead are Dustin Johnson (even through 16) and Jonathan Byrd (1-over through 15). Haas has just two more holes left to make up ground on Mickelson and Bradley.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Field Overtakes Phil Mickelson, Bill Haas Leads Through 10

Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley entered the final day of the 2012 Northern Trust Open tied at 7-under atop the leaderboard. Both players shot even through the front nine on Sunday, falling back into a three-way tie for second along with Jonathan Byrd. Bill Haas has taken over the top spot on the leaderboard, shooting 3-under through 10 holes to take a one-shot lead over the field.

Haas began Day 3 in sixth place at 5-under, but three birdies have made him one of the day's biggest movers so far. Mickelson appeared to be cruising early on with birdies on holes one and five, but he bogeyed the last two of the front nine to stem his run. Bradley has been much more erratic, shooting plus-2 with three bogeys through five before coming back with birdies on holes seven and nine.

Sergio Garcia leads the round, shooting 8-under through 15 holes. He has moved into a four-way tie for fifth place at 6-under for the tournament.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley On Top Going Into Sunday

After jumping out to a big lead in the first round and shooting one-under in the second, Phil Mickelson has allowed the field, specifically Keegan Bradley, to catch up to him in the Northern Trust Open. Lefty shot a 70 for the second straight day to move to -7 and Bradley fired a five-under 66 to tie him atop the leaderboard.

The rest of the race has tightened up considerably, too. Behind Mickelson and Bradley are Pat Perez, Jonathan Byrd and Bryce Molder, who also shot a 66 Saturday, at -6 and the always dangerous Dustin Johnson, among others, lurking at -5.

Some Friday contenders dropped off precipitously on Saturday, like Matt Kuchar, who was just two strokes off Mickelson but shot a +4 and now sits seven strokes behind and pretty much out of the race. Carl Pettersson was knotted with Kuchar, but he dropped five strokes and sits at +1 for the tournament.

Mickelson is coming off a nice win at Pebble Beach in his last tournament, and this is another stacked field he finds himself on top of. If he keeps this up for an extended stretch, he might be taking home multiple majors this year.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson And Dustin Johnson Tied At Top Of The Leaderboard

Looking for back-to-back wins, Phil Mickelson is even through ten holes at the Northern Trust Open at Riviera on Saturday and is tied for first with good friend and fellow bomber Dustin Johnson. Both Butch Harmon proteges are at 6 under and maintain a one-shot lead over a host of players which include reigning PGA Champion Keegan Bradley. Uncharacteristically for Phil, his round has been relatively steady with seven pars in the first nine holes. A birdie at Riviera's famous opening hole looked to be indicative of yet another low number from Mickelson, but he has evened out over the front nine.

Johnson, on the other hand, is five under on the day and has chased down Mickelson. He has played 15 holes so far, looking for his first win of the season after being in contention last week at Pebble Beach in a tournament he had previously won twice. The young superstar has a win in each of his four years as a professional, but did not win until late last season in a condensed three-round Barclays. Johnson struggled at the President's Cup in Australia but a win in the first month of the season could be a huge boost and kick-start a dominant year.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson Salvages Good Round, Maintains Lead At 6-Under

Phil Mickelson took the good with the bad Friday in the second round of the 2012 Northern Trust Open, and he remains the tournament's leader heading into the weekend.

Mickelson chipped in for one of his two birdies and holed a wedge from 110 yards out for an eagle on his 17th hole. However, he also missed 10 greens and snagged three bogeys. His final score on the day was 70, which, coupled with Thursday's 66, keeps him atop the leaderboard with an overall 6-under.

Just behind Mickelson is Pat Perez, who rocketed up the leaderboard after shooting a 65 on Friday. Not bad, considering he shot one-over on Thursday.

Five golfers sit behind Mickelson and Perez at 4-under. Other notables include Matt Kuchar (4-under), Keegan Bradley (2-under), K.J. Choi (2-under), Bill Haas (1-under), Luke Donald (E), defending champion Aaron Baddeley (E) and Vijay Singh (2-over).

The projected cut is 3-over, which means Justin Leonard, Chris DiMarco, Martin Laird and Jhonattan Vegas would rank among those out.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson Leads After Round One

Fresh off a win at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, Phil Mickelson is at the top of the leader board after one round of the Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.

The first round was suspended due to darkness and will resume at 7 a.m. local time on Friday. Television coverage will begin at 3 p.m. ET on the GOLF channel

Mickelson shot a five-under 66, taking sole possession of first place with a chip-in from 35-feet on the 18th hole. It was the sixth birdie of the round for Mickelson, who was happy to end the round on a high note.

"It feels really good to get that one extra shot because I felt like I left one or two out on 16, 17, and you hate to have such a good round and let a few slide late," Mickelson said. "To make that shot unexpectedly on 18 felt like I got one of those back."

J.B. Holmes and Hunter Mahan are one shot back after the first round, while Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson are at three-under to round out the Top 5. Sergio Garcia and K.J. Choi are among eight at two under. Choi compared the greens at the Riviera to the ones at Augusta National.

"The greens were very hard and fast today, even faster than Augusta at times," Choi said. "The poa annua grass, it was difficult to determine the grain. Sometimes it was bumpy and sometimes it wasn't, so you had a tough time putting."

Defending champion Aaron Baddeley shot a two-over 73 and is tied for 55th.
