Augusta National, Home Of The Masters, May Admit First Female Member

Stay connected with SB Nation

Will Augusta National finally admit its first female member soon? That might just happen with the arrival of Ginni Rometty as IBM's new CEO. According to Bloomberg News, Augusta National has extended a membership invitation to IBM's CEO in years past, which puts the golf club in an awkward position if it does not do so this time around. Doubly so because IBM is one of the sponsors of the Masters, which takes place at the club.

Founded in 1933, Augusta National is approaching eight decades of not having a single female member. Usually around this time of the year, when the Masters Tournament takes place there, this topic is always a hot conversation. We need only recall Martha Burk's 2003 protest outside of the golf club.

There are no indications yet as to whether an invitation will be extended, but right now it seems that if one does, it will be a result of the historical precedent set in the past with IBM -- not to erase one of its last remaining barriers (though it will certainly accomplish that at the same time).
