After an even-par first round at The Masters, it would've been easy to assume Fred Couples would hang around the middle of the leaderboard and not make much noise at Augusta National. But if we've learned anything watching Couples wander the fairways at Augusta, it's that something about the place just fits him. He plays well here, despite his age -- 52 now -- and his lingering back problems.
So it shouldn't come as a surprise to see Couples' name atop the leaderboard after two rounds. And it shouldn't have been surprising to see him surging throughout the second round, with plenty of birdies along the way. When it was all said and done, Couples had seven birdies and just two bogeys on the day, good for a second-round 67 -- the low round thus far.
A bogey on No. 1 was followed by back-to-back birdies on three and four for Couples as he began a boom or bust front nine. He fell back a shot again on No. 6, then birdied the seventh, eighth and ninth as he made the turn. The back nine was clean by comparison, with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16 to go along with pars everywhere else.
And now Couples finds himself in the lead, tied with Jason Dufner, who's also in the clubhouse at 5-under.
